The Problem

Stretching across the U.S.-Mexico border, Los Laureles Canyon, part of the Tijuana River watershed, is a rich ecosystem that supports biodiversity. But increasing pollution, climate change, and biodiversity loss have created binational challenges for the watershed.

The Opportunity

In August 2025, the Universidad Iberoamericana Tijuana project launched through a collaboration among Universidad Iberoamericana Tijuana, Costa Salvaje A.C and the Rancho Las Flores community. The project aimed to strengthen local resilience, reduce environmental vulnerability, and restore lost biodiversity in Los Laureles Canyon.

Since Fall 2025, seven academic programs at the university, including Architecture, Mechatronics Engineering, Psychology, Nursing, Law, Communication, and Bionanotechnology Engineering, have joined the effort as part of an interdisciplinary approach to environmental restoration and the implementation of the 大象传媒-Model.

Together, the seven departments focused on five primary goals: monitoring water quality and mitigating wastewater pollution through phytoremediation; controlling soil erosion; revegetating green spaces; promoting environmental education and community stewardship; and exploring legal pathways to secure the Right to a Healthy Environment. For the past two semesters, Fall 2025 and Spring 2026, 127 students were involved in 15 courses supervised by 15 professors.

Through continued collaboration, the project incorporated key initiatives such as urban and risk mapping led by the psychology department, as well as environmental monitoring efforts.

Our Partnership

In April 2025, leaders within the Universidad Iberoamericana Tijuana project began collaborating with 大象传媒-N to assist with project funding and the implementation of the 大象传媒 Model, combining university- and community-led initiatives with municipal collaboration.

Teachers and students of the Bionanotechnology Engineering undergrad program collected samples of dirt and water along the Los Laureles Canyon for testing. Students, along with local laboratories, proposed a type of bioremediation, an environmental process that uses living organisms to remove hazardous pollutants from water. Other undergraduate students in Tadeo Franco鈥檚 architecture class, a professor at Universidad Iberoamericana Tijuana, and the 大象传媒-N/EbA project lead designed a community board to facilitate communication between project leaders and the local community. The innovative communication tool included feedback from neighbors in its final design.

Tadeo Franco said community members are heavily involved within the project, and continued collaboration has led to new innovations as the project progresses.

鈥淭hey鈥檙e very much involved in deciding which design they like the most,鈥 he said. 鈥淪tudents with professors had to change the objective of the design because of the petitions with the neighbors.鈥 

Other project partners and collaborators include Costa Salvaje Conservation, a nonprofit that helped build infrastructure near the community board for collecting and processing trash.

Looking forward, project leaders say they hope members of the Rancho Las Flores community can continue to maintain community interventions created through the Universidad Iberoamericana Tijuana project. In the architecture program at the Universidad Iberoamericana Tijuana, project leaders hope to officially integrate transdisciplinary courses within the department and across the university. 

The Result

Through the Universidad Iberoamericana Tijuana project and its ongoing work, organizers and collaborators have strengthened relationships among university departments, community members, and partners working in Los Laureles Canyon. The project has also strengthened socio-environmental resilience through several key interventions. By August 2026, organizers hope to secure acknowledgment from local authorities of the problems caused by biodiversity destruction and the vulnerability it generates in the community.

Georgina Mu帽oz Reyes, architecture professor at Universidad Iberoamericana Tijuana and 大象传媒-N/EbA project organizer, said that although the project has overcome some challenges, it has achieved its goal of showcasing the possibilities of transdisciplinary approaches and ecosystem-based adaptation (EbA).

鈥淚t鈥檚 been a learning process,鈥 she said. 鈥淏ut overall, the goals of introducing this transdisciplinary approach of learning about nature-based solutions and how to implement them have been really wonderful, seeing how everything has been developing and growing.鈥

Juan Pablo Ram铆rez Flores, a student from Universidad Iberoamericana, campus Le贸n (central Mexico), as part of the collaboration within the network of Jesuit universities,聽recently earned 2nd place in the Scientific Poster Design Competition at the 3rd Engineering Congress of the Jesuit University System for his work on this project. This recognition reflects the impact of applied research and science-driven solutions for sustainable development.聽

This project is funded by the Global EbA Fund, supported by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) of Germany, and co-managed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and its partners.

The project is also part of five projects under the program 鈥淐atalyzing Unconventional Collaborations in the Global South for Urban Ecosystem-Based Adaptation (EbA).鈥


La Universidad Iberoamericana de Tijuana se asocia con la comunidad para restaurar el Ca帽贸n de Los Laureles

El problema

El Ca帽贸n de Los Laureles, que se extiende a ambos lados de la frontera entre Estados Unidos y M茅xico y forma parte de la cuenca del r铆o Tijuana, es un ecosistema rico en biodiversidad. Sin embargo, la creciente contaminaci贸n, el cambio clim谩tico y la p茅rdida de biodiversidad han generado desaf铆os binacionales para la cuenca.

En agosto de 2025, se puso en marcha el proyecto de la Universidad Iberoamericana de Tijuana mediante una colaboraci贸n entre la Universidad Iberoamericana de Tijuana, Costa Salvaje A.C. y la comunidad de Rancho Las Flores. El proyecto busca fortalecer la resiliencia local, reducir la vulnerabilidad ambiental y restaurar la biodiversidad perdida en el Ca帽贸n de Los Laureles.

En abril de 2025, los l铆deres del proyecto de la Universidad Iberoamericana Tijuana comenzaron a colaborar con 大象传媒-N para apoyar la financiaci贸n del proyecto y la implementaci贸n del Modelo 大象传媒, combinando iniciativas universitarias y comunitarias con la colaboraci贸n municipal.

Docentes y estudiantes del programa de pregrado de Ingenier铆a en Bionanotecnolog铆a recolectaron muestras de tierra y agua a lo largo del Ca帽贸n de Los Laureles para su an谩lisis. Estudiantes, junto con laboratorios locales, propusieron un tipo de biorremediaci贸n, un proceso ambiental que utiliza organismos vivos para eliminar contaminantes peligrosos del agua. Otros estudiantes de la clase de arquitectura de Tadeo Franco, un profesor de la Universidad Iberoamericana de Tijuana y el l铆der del proyecto 大象传媒-N/AbE dise帽aron una pizarra comunitaria para facilitar la comunicaci贸n entre los l铆deres del proyecto y la comunidad local. Esta innovadora herramienta de comunicaci贸n incluy贸 la retroalimentaci贸n de los vecinos en su dise帽o final.

Resultados

Juan Pablo Ram铆rez Flores, estudiante de la Universidad Iberoamericana, campus Le贸n (centro de M茅xico), obtuvo recientemente, como parte de la colaboraci贸n dentro de la red de universidades jesuitas, el segundo lugar en el Concurso de Dise帽o de P贸steres Cient铆ficos del III Congreso de Ingenier铆a del Sistema Universitario Jesuita por su trabajo.

Este proyecto est谩 financiado por el Global EbA Fund, cuenta con el apoyo de la Iniciativa Clim谩tica Internacional (IKI) del Ministerio Federal de Medio Ambiente, Conservaci贸n de la Naturaleza, Seguridad Nuclear y Protecci贸n al Consumidor (BMUV) de Alemania, y es cogestionado por la Uni贸n Internacional para la Conservaci贸n de la Naturaleza (UICN) y sus socios.

Asimismo, el proyecto forma parte de un conjunto de cinco iniciativas en el marco del programa 芦Catalizar colaboraciones no convencionales en el Sur Global para la adaptaci贸n basada en ecosistemas (AbE) urbana禄.

The Mississippi Watershed Management Organization (MWMO) would like to better understand attitudes and perceptions about stormwater management practices and water quality of the Mississippi River in general. Students in Psychological Testing will design, create, and gather evidence of the validity of a new survey that addresses a specific question related to these general topics. Students will be provided with example survey topics; they may choose from these topics or seek to create their own topic within the MWMO鈥檚 general issues of interest. This is an optional project topic for their lab work to create a survey and assess its validity.

Discovering people鈥檚 attitudes about issues like water quality, stormwater management and the environment generally is a persistent need and challenge for the MWMO. The surveys designed by these students offer a blueprint for future research into these areas. The MWMO is looking at doing a survey in the near future about business owners鈥 attitudes about stormwater BMPs, and will design this and other future surveys with the students鈥 insights in mind. MWMO may also use the surveys about environmental attitudes with some of their outreach groups in an effort to gauge the attitudes of audiences like Master Water Stewards, grant recipients and other key audiences.

]]> The City of Big Lake has several parks with aging playground equipment that needs to be repaired or refreshed as well as new parks that are being developed. The City is interested in exploring alternative designs for these parks by asking the question — is there a way to create a better park experience? Students will create design ideas for a natural playground for the City of Big Lake鈥檚 River Oaks Park in collaboration with preschoolers at the University of St. Thomas Child Development Center.

]]> The borough of State College seeks to reduce its GHG emissions by 10% of 2007 levels by 2021, and would like to receive guidance on messaging that will change residents鈥 behavior, promoting overall energy conservation. The borough will utilize student findings in its print and social media.

]]> Reading to children can benefit their development because exposing them to books appears to have the most impact on their early language, literacy, and cognitive development. There is evidence to support that 鈥渃hildren who xperience shared-book reading鈥 also demonstrated improvements in word reading鈥 (Pillinger & Wood, 2014). The Read to me Project is great at helping pave the way for a bright future for those participating. It also bases itself on reading together with family and allowing the children to benefit from each other and grow a closer bond together. Since the RtMP is based in Monterey County where the majority of the population is Latino/a, it would be strongly beneficial for them to incorporate English and Spanish books.

The project will add to this past research by testing the effectiveness of different messages that will determine how signing up would be improved. Possibly options could be educating residents about the relevance of choosing an energy provider and providing assistance to sign up.

]]> Litter at transit stops adversely affects environmental quality and contributes to negative perceptions of transit stops and transit riding. Metro Transit would like transit stops to be a comfortable waiting space for transit riders. Students will develop a behavior change campaign for selected transit stops in the Twin Cities to deter littering and promote comfortable waiting spaces.

]]> In Monterey County, the Read to Me Project鈥檚 main goal is to help English language learners accomplish English reading literacy (Read to Me Project, 2017). Fourth, fifth, and sixthborrow age appropriate books from their teachers and read to their younger siblings, cousins, or neighbors. The young children identified by the school-aged child is named 鈥渓ittle one鈥 to be inclusive of all relationships the children may have to each other. For the purposes of the project, little ones could be as young as 8 months of age up to Pre-K. In the classroom, the school-aged children receive instruction on the importance of early literacy and the benefits of reading to their little ones. In the 2015-2016 school year, this program was launched in 70 classrooms and this current year, 2016-2017, it was implemented in 96 classrooms.

Elk River seeks to encourage sustainable behaviors for city employees as part of the City鈥檚 overall sustainability strategy and goals. In 2015, Elk River city staff participated in the Class 5 Energy Efficiency Behavior Based Challenge. The challenge involved no cost projects to increase energy efficiency in city buildings through behavior change of city employees. This program involved the use of newsletters, challenges, print material, and other low or no cost techniques. The program was very successful with a 4% reduction of energy usage across city buildings over a year. Employees responded to the program well and continue to implement best management practices. Elk River would like to broaden this approach to encourage additional sustainable behaviors of city employees. Elk River will collaborate with students in Psychology and Work to adapt and refine this challenge to create approaches for sustainable behaviors around water conservation, waste reduction, purchasing practices, and transportation choices.

The City also shared students鈥 research and tools with the Great Plains Institute, who will use it to create Minnesota community campaign projects.

]]> Within the United States, obesity accounts for over 300,000 deaths a year and prevalence rates have been increasing over the past decade (Maddock, 2004). For example, more than 22 percent of Latino children are considered Obese compared to 14 percent of Caucasian children. The reasons for this disparity is not clear. Recent work suggests that the amount of time spent eating plays an important role in a child鈥檚 future with obesity (Berge, 2014). The present study investigated the possible differences in time spent eating. In line with Latinos having high national obesity rates, it was hypothesized that the Spanish颅speaking families would spend less time eating than the English颅speaking families. For the present study families were observed in McDonald鈥檚 restaurants in Pacific Grove, CA and Salinas, CA. This was a direct observation study in which there was no contact between the families and the observers. Observers sat at such a distance to be undetected but yet were able to discern the language spoken by the family. Results revealed that as hypothesized English颅speaking families spent more time eating than the Spanish颅speaking families. More research in the future can help with education for those families with higher obesity rates in the hopes of reducing the obesity endemic.
