]]> El proyecto busca brindar la asesor铆a t茅cnica necesaria para la reactivaci贸n de los servicios tur铆sticos en cinco comunidades de Santa Elena. Debido al Covid 19 los emprendimientos de turismo comunitario se vieron seriamente afectados por la baja de clientes. Adem谩s de la necesidad de brindar no solo servicios seguros sino tambi茅n de bioseguridad para que puedan atraerlos nuevamente a trav茅s de alimentos y bebidas y prestaci贸n de servicios para eventos. Adicionalmente, se identificaron los impactos que provocan las actividades tur铆sticas sobre el recurso playa de diferentes comunidades, con el fin de planificar actividades de sensibilizaci贸n tanto a los prestadores de servicios como a los visitantes.
A partir del trabajo realizado se desarroll贸 un programa de capacitaci贸n que tambi茅n puede ser manejado de manera asincr贸nica, gracias a la creaci贸n de un canal de YouTube en el que se pueden encontrar temas para el 谩rea de alimentos y bebidas. Se identific贸 la l铆nea base para poder trabajar en la creaci贸n de un destino para bodas y eventos en la comuna La Entrada, generando en el 2021 una gu铆a b谩sica de los tipos de servicios que se pueden brindar por la capacidad instalada y proyectada en los diferentes espacios de la poblaci贸n.
Todo este trabajo fue realizado por diferentes equipos de trabajo de la carrera de turismo durante los dos per铆odos acad茅micos del 2021, dando como resultado la l铆nea base para las 谩reas de alimentos y bebidas, eventos y planificaci贸n de destinos sostenibles, seguros y bioseguros, que aprovechan los recursos efectivamente.

]]> The purpose of the Human Development 497 course collaboration with the City of San Marcos聽Senior Activity Center (SAC) was to review current volunteer processes and develop strategies聽for a more efficient structure for the volunteer process. Thirty three students studying with聽Dr. Eliza Bigham utilized a range of strategies, such as review of the literature from a wide聽range of databases, using an online survey program to gather input from current CSUSM聽students, consultations with the SAC Administrators, SAC Staff, and Professor Bigham,聽interviews with SAC members, and identifying appropriate models. The data, along with聽ideas generated in the classroom sessions, was utilized to construct effective materials聽addressing each of the objectives. By collaborating and applying the skills that they have聽learned throughout their academic program, the students were able to successfully deliver聽tools and recommendations to the SAC that will benefit the SAC鈥檚 future volunteer related聽procedures.聽

]]> The City of Salinas of has outdated vector and raster data. As a result of dated information, the City has not able to progress in terms of development. By allowing students at CSU Monterey Bay, the City of Salinas has been able to drastically update their data. The data that was edited in this case portrayed to the sewage systems of the city.

]]> To consolidate the two data sets (InletsByZone and swInlet) taken of Salinas鈥 stormwater inlet drains, data points were verified and validated through a series of steps; if the points on both data sets鈥 overlapped, the data point was considered verified, if the points differed slightly or only one layer was present, Google Earth’s 鈥渟treet-view鈥 feature was utilized in order to confirm existence of a stormwater inlet and validate such point. After points were validated, the 鈥渟wInlet鈥 layer was selected as the disposal layer due to the lack of information in the attribute table, as opposed to the 鈥淚nletsByZone鈥 layer which had more often been edited and added to by the city staff. The disposal of the 鈥渟wInlet鈥 layer left only the 鈥淚nletsByZone鈥 layer, in which all points are now validated or consolidated with any lacking data taken from the 鈥渟wInlet鈥 layer.

]]> This project was conducted for the city of Salinas to assign geographic coordinates to a large set of public data, so that the city is able to obtain the locations of business licenses visibly by using ArcGIS. Our team was assigned approximately 8,252 total businesses and we had to verify the address location to ensure the business coordinates. After successful completion of separating and dividing data, we had to ensure the accuracy of business geocode license data for the City of Salinas.

]]> This project was completed as part of the 2018-2019 Resilient Communities Project (rcp.umn.edu) partnership with Ramsey County. Ramsey County Behavioral Health provides comprehensive mental health and chemical health services to children and adults, many of whom lack access to treatment. A substantial number of Karen refugees–a minority ethnic group from Burma鈥檚 eastern border along Thailand–have settled in St. Paul. Karen residents are currently underrepresented in their use of all behavioral health services, particularly crisis intervention services. Anecdotally, staff hear that people experiencing mental health crisis are either using the emergency room, go without care, or receive services through the corrections system after an
arrest. Ramsey County project lead Nikki Miller worked with a pair of students enrolled in FSOS 4294: Research Internship, taught by Dr. Sara Axtell, to research the literature on crisis intervention programs, strategies, or approaches that are successful nationally in understanding and
meeting the needs of the Karen or other traditionally underserved ethnic/racial communities; conduct telephone interviews with staff at organizations or agencies that serve Karen families to learn more about these programs, how they were initiated, how they operate, and best practices/lessons learned that might be transferable to the Ramsey County context; and recommend strategies to increase access to and use of county services by Karen
families. The students’ final report and a project brief summarizing the project are available.
